Super Mario RPG: What Is The Mystery Egg? Where To Find, How To Unlock Its Secret (2024)

There are a few unusual items in Super Mario RPG that you might be wondering 'Why?' or 'What is it?'

The Mystery Egg is one example, a strange item that doesn't seem to do anything — but in both Legend of the Seven Stars on the Super NES and the Switch remake, there's a trick to making it work.

In this guide, we'll be telling you all about the Mystery Egg — what it is, how to get it, how to use it, and how to unlock its hidden secret.

Super Mario RPG: Mystery Egg Guide

What is the Mystery Egg?

The Mystery Egg is a reusable item in Super Mario RPG. Using it in battle reveals that it does absolutely nothing.

It may seem pretty useless, but you need to meet a couple of different conditions for it to properly work.

Where to find the Mystery Egg?

You can buy the Mystery Egg from the treasure-hunting Toad in the Moleville item shop for 200 coins. It's the second item he sells, so you'll first need to buy the Lucky Jewel from him too.

The Toad doesn't appear in the shop until after you've beaten the boss at the end of the Mole Mines and got the third star piece, but after that, he's there for the remainder of the game.

How to use the Mystery Egg

The Mystery Egg is used just like any other item in battle — go into the item menu and select it. But as we mentioned above, it seems to do nothing.

What you need to make it work as intended is to get the Nurture Ring / B'tub Ring and equip it to Peach. Then, in battle, have Peach use the item and you'll get a different animation with it. It'll still do nothing, mind you, but with this setup, you can eventually get the Lamb's Lure item.

How to get the Nurture Ring / B'tub Ring

The Nurture Ring — known as the B'tub Ring on the SNES — is an accessory that is available to buy at the Marrymore item shop in the hotel for 145 Coins.

This ring can only be equipped by Peach and halves damage taken from elemental attacks.

How to get the Lamb's Lure

The Lamb's Lure is another strange item that can be used over and over again without consequence.

To get this, you need to get Peach to use the Mystery Egg ten times in battle while she's got the Nurture Ring / B'tub Ring equipped. When she goes to use the Egg the 11th time, you'll get some new dialogue and a sheep will appear. Congratulations, you've hatched a lamb from an egg and the Mystery Egg has become the Lamb's Lure.

What does the Lamb's Lure do?

The Lamb's Lure is a very powerful item. It can instantly defeat all enemies on screen — except bosses and extremely big enemies. However, you won't get any experience points or coins if you beat enemies this way. So it's more of an "in a pinch" situation or a collectible.

It can also turn into another item — Sheep Attack.

How to get Sheep Attack

Sheep Attack takes much longer to get than the Lamb's Lure, but you don't need to use Peach or the Ring to get it.

All you have to do is use the Lamb's Lure 48 times. Not only is that a lot of item uses, you also can't do this over and over again in the same fight as the Lamb's Lure defeats all enemies in battle. So that's 48 fights you've got to push through...

What does Sheep Attack do?

Sheep Attack is identical to Lamb's Lure — it will defeat all enemies on screen (except bosses or big foes), and you also don't get exp. or coins. You just get a rather amusing animation of all of the enemies turning into sheep.

Is the Mystery Egg worth it?

Honestly, that's up to you. Considering how long it takes to get the ultimate version of the item, and the fact it doesn't work on bosses... probably not.

However, if you want every single item in the game, then get used to the item menu.
